Utah DMV Announces Select Lobbies Will Reopen By Appointment Only

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Division of Motor Vehicles announced it would be reopening lobbies at locations across the state beginning May 1.

However, residents must make an appointment ahead of time, according to the DMV’s statement.

DMV lobbies in Utah have been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and only a handful of them have drive-thru windows available. Most services can be done on the state’s DMV website.

“You can do many things online without an office visit,” according to the DMV website.

Drivers can renew their vehicles, change addresses, order license plates, request refunds, report a sold vehicle, new a disabled placard, get vehicle renewal information and setup email renewal reminders all online.

However, there are instances that require an in-person visit, such as transferring a title, impound release, and insurance reinstatement. There were enough Utahns who had to use in-person services recently that the South Valley DMV, located in Draper, has had an influx of vehicles in its drive-thru. Many residents waited for up to eight hours at the location on certain days, and some arrived as early as 1:30 a.m. in order to be at the front of the line.

It should be noted that driver licenses are handled by the Utah Department of Public Safety – Driver License Division and not by the DMV.

The Salt Lake, South Valley, Farmington, Ogden and Provo locations will open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Click here to schedule an appointment.

Officials said social distancing guidelines will remain in place, and everyone who visits the DMV is asked to continue keeping 6-foot distance away from others and wear a face covering.

The drive-thru locations, which have been working on extended hours, will return to their normal working hours of Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
