MIDVALE, Utah – Officials with the Unified Police Department confirmed two people were dead after a shooting at a Midvale apartment.
The situation happened at Candlestick Apartments near 7800 South and 80 East.
Authorities said they responded to a domestic violence call at the complex Friday around 10:30 a.m.
Unified police at the scene said authorities made contact with a suspect and were trying to get him to calm down and come out of the apartment. One of the apartment buildings was evacuated and residents in another building were told to shelter in place.
Detective Ken Hansen said police sent in a robot that did not detect any movement in the unit. The SWAT team then deployed flashbangs and entered, discovering the bodies and two firearms in the room.
The victims were later identified by police as 26-year-old Miranda Schachinger and 26-year-old Isaac Andre Renfro, both of Midvale. Hansen did not confirm the relationship between the two, if there was one.
Witnesses told police the two had an argument Thursday night. Investigators said they also learned of some worrisome messages or a video that had been shared before the 911 call.
“That’s why our initial officers evacuated nearby apartments,” Hansen said.
Police said it was probable the incident could be a murder-suicide but it was too early in the investigation to determine that.
“It’s an unfortunate situation we hoped would end differently, but it didn’t,” Hansen said.
