SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The roof of a parking structure at an apartment complex collapsed Saturday evening, according to Captain Leland Stowe with the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
Firefighters said the collapsed portion at the Brixton Apartments near 2200 South and 700 East was a suspended ceiling.
No people were underneath the structure when it collapsed and no injuries were reported. Video sent in by a KSL viewer showed insulation blowing in the air.
“All of a sudden I saw this huge cloud of pink,” said resident Emma Phelps, who lost her car in the collapse. “I thought it was either cotton or cherry blossoms or hail.”

Stowe said around 10 vehicles were underneath the collapsed portion of the structure.
“I’m just really glad nobody was underneath it because usually there are always people getting their bikes fixed coming in and out,” Phelps said.
Firefighters said they had cleared the scene and the cause for the collapse appeared to be wind-related.
“When that wind burst came in here, it over-pressurized that ceiling space in there and blew it out,” said Battalion Chief Ryan Mellor.
Phelps added it was a close call for one dog, who was in a bike shop located in the garage.
“There was a man who was getting something done at the bike shop and he said his dog was in his truck when he was getting everything taken care of when the roof fell,” she said. “But he got the dog out. The dog is fine, which is the most important part.”
Crews also said the total damage cost was unknown.
“It makes me a little bit nervous, but I trust the rental company — they’ve always been really good about fixing everything,” Phelps said.
