SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — In a place where large protests are uncommon, hundreds gathered Wednesday to show their support and call for justice and change following the deaths of George Floyd and others across the country.
Many families brought their children and several brought baby strollers as they marched through Daybreak. Numerous demonstrators carried Black Lives Matter signs as they stood united in a fight for greater equality and social justice.
“We’re a family who wants to instill in our kids a sense that everyone should be treated equally,” said Joseph Stuart. “Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.”
Though only a small group had formed 20 minutes before the scheduled 6 p.m. start at a park off of Kestrel Rise Road, numbers quickly ballooned just in time for the march to begin.
“I mean look at this —this is awesome,” Brooke Stapleton said.
Landry Sheppard also brought her children to make the short trek through the Daybreak community.
“I want my kids to know that we support black lives and that we need to make a change,” Sheppard said. “I think everyone here feels strongly and there’s a lot of love to give.”
Stuart said the demonstration allowed families to “walk the walk” when it came to supporting equality and an end to racism.
Multiple parents said they viewed the event as a way to educate their kids.
“We’re trying to teach them young that we stand with you — we’re here,” Stapleton said. “We stand with the Black community.”
