Alpine School District Needs To Hire 800 More Substitute Teachers

AMERICAN FORK, Utah – The Alpine School District is looking to hire 1,500 substitutes for the upcoming school year. The district has partnered with Educational Solutions Services to hire 700 so far, but they’re still 800 substitutes short of their goal.

Tim and Donnalee Eisenhart have signed up to sub this fall and are excited to get back into the classroom. They are anticipating this school year to look a little different than years past.

“No one really knows quite what it’s going to be like,” Tim Eisenhart said. “If a teacher doesn’t feel good, you know, the school doesn’t want them coming in. What could be a one-day absence could turn into a multiple-day absence.”

Retired teacher Donnalee Eisenhart said substituting was the best way she could help educators after 29 years in the classroom.

“I’m just going to be there for when they can’t come to school and I’m going to be a lifeline for them,” she said.

Last school year, the district averaged between 250 and 350 substitutes needed per day. Brandon Ethington with ESS anticipates the need may be greater during the pandemic.

“Having our sub pool really as high as we can and hitting that goal of 1,500 will help us meet the surprises and help us be prepared to help fulfill the needs of the schools,” Ethington said.

ESS is hoping to get qualified applicants by the start of school on Aug. 18 but is looking to hire even into the school year. Salary ranges from $70-$110 per day, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the school.

“They need to have a high school diploma, they need to be able to pass a background check and lastly, they need to be good with students,” said ESS regional district manager Joseph Fitzgerald.

Anyone interested in the job posting can apply here. ESS will be holding three in-person hiring events where applicants can get more information, ask questions and apply for the job.
