SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Transportation Security Administration are reminding travelers that there is a reason they have to remove their belts after a belt buckle knife was found during routine screening at Salt Lake City International Airport.
Lorie Dankers, TSA public information officer, said the knife was found Thursday morning.
A man was flying to Phoenix when the image of a knife appeared during x-ray screening.
Wonder why TSA requires travelers to remove their belts in the general screening lanes? Because sometimes belt buckles contain a knife. This one was discovered during routing screening @slcairport Thursday. pic.twitter.com/6BQQ6xvOxR

“They told the passenger he could check (the knife), return it to his car … or leave it behind, and he chose to leave it behind,” Dankers said.
She described the “not-uncommon” buckle as more of a novelty item, similar to a brass knuckle handbag.
But these items are still prohibited on flights, and Dankers said sometimes highlighting unusual items can help remind the public that even mundane items on the prohibited list are still prohibited.
Knives are allowed in checked bags and prohibited in carry-on bags.
“Any sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and inspectors,” officials said.
