OREM, Utah — Ground has officially broken on the Orem Utah Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A small group of invited guests gathered for the ceremony Saturday morning. Guests were limited due to local government restrictions put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build the temple during a session of General Conference in October 2019.
The new temple will be located on a 16-acre lot at approximately 1471 South Geneva Road, west of Interstate 15 and south of University Parkway.
Officials said the three-story temple was expected to be about 70,000 square feet with a center spire.
A 20,000-square-foot meetinghouse will also be constructed on the temple site.
Utah currently has 17 operating temples including the Bountiful, Brigham City, Cedar City, Draper, Logan, Jordan River, Manti, Monticello, Mount Timpanogos, Ogden, Oquirrh Mountain, Payson, Provo City Center, St. George, Salt Lake, and Vernal Temples.
