SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Salt Lake City announced classes for Wednesday, Sept. 9, will be canceled due to power outages impacting school buildings. Several schools from the Weber School District will also be shut, and Davis School District officials said their classes will be canceled Wednesday as well.
Over half of the buildings in the Salt Lake City School District were without power. It was unknown when power would be restored.
“This certainly is not what we had expected on our first day of school,” SLC officials said. “We’re disappointed we couldn’t see our students today, but hope to start remote learning very soon. We currently have power outages in more than half of our schools, as well as throughout the city, and Rocky Mountain Power has let us know it may take up to two days to restore power to everyone.”
Remote classes will begin on Thursday, but district officials said they will be flexible if students still cannot access the internet by then.
Due to power outages, meals will be offered for students at the following seven school sites from 11 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.

Officials with the Weber School District said schools feeding Bonneville High School will be closed Wednesday because of “continuing power outages and other related safety issues.
Schools that will close included Bonneville High, South and TH Bell Junior High, and Burch Creek, H Guy Child, Riverdale, Roosevelt, Uintah and Washington Terrace Elementary Schools.
Any changes to that plan were expected to be announced on the district’s Facebook page.
Officials with the Ogden School District said they planned to resume classes Wednesday in buildings where power has been restored, including Ogden Online.
They planned to notify parents by 7 a.m. about any schools that might be closed for the day.
Spokesperson Chris Williams with the Davis School District said their schools will not hold classes on Wednesday.
Weather forecasts call for continued strong winds until at least mid-morning tomorrow. In light of that, we are canceling school for all DSD schools Wednesday, Sept. 9, because of power outages, continued weather threats and highway restrictions for high-profile vehicles.

In order to make sure all students have face-to-face instruction this week, we will hold in-person face-to-face instruction on Thursday for Group 2 and Friday for Group 1. In our secondary schools, B-day classes will be held on both Thursday and Friday.

The University of Utah sent an alert saying classes would also resume Wednesday.
