SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Salt Lake City announced classes for Wednesday, Sept. 9, will be canceled due to power outages impacting school buildings. Several schools from the Weber School District will also be shut, and Davis School District officials said their classes will be canceled Wednesday as well.

Over half of the buildings in the Salt Lake City School District were without power. It was unknown when power would be restored.

“This certainly is not what we had expected on our first day of school,” SLC officials said. “We’re disappointed we couldn’t see our students today, but hope to start remote learning very soon. We currently have power outages in more than half of our schools, as well as throughout the city, and Rocky Mountain Power has let us know it may take up to two days to restore power to everyone.”

Remote classes will begin on Thursday, but district officials said they will be flexible if students still cannot access the internet by then.

Due to power outages, meals will be offered for students at the following seven school sites from 11 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.

  • Backman Elementary (South Parking Area – Enter from 1500 West)
601 North 1500 West, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • East High School (West Parking Area – Enter from 900 South)
840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Edison Elementary (U-shaped Driveway – Located in front of school)
430 South Cheyenne Street, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Meadowlark Elementary (Northeast Parking Area)
497 North Morton Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Northwest Middle School (Northeast Parking Area – Located next to main entrance)
1730 West 1700 North, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • West High School (U-shaped Driveway – Located North of building next to cafeteria entrance)
241 North 300 West, Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Whittier Elementary (North Parking Area – Enter from Roberta Street)
1600 South 300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah

Officials with the Weber School District said schools feeding Bonneville High School will be closed Wednesday because of “continuing power outages and other related safety issues.

Schools that will close included Bonneville High, South and TH Bell Junior High, and Burch Creek, H Guy Child, Riverdale, Roosevelt, Uintah and Washington Terrace Elementary Schools.

Any changes to that plan were expected to be announced on the district’s Facebook page.

Officials with the Ogden School District said they planned to resume classes Wednesday in buildings where power has been restored, including Ogden Online.

They planned to notify parents by 7 a.m. about any schools that might be closed for the day.

Spokesperson Chris Williams with the Davis School District said their schools will not hold classes on Wednesday.

The University of Utah sent an alert saying classes would also resume Wednesday.
