WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The Navajo Department of Health has reported an increase of 6 deaths related to COVID-19, and 8 more people have tested positive for the virus on the reservation.

Total deaths reported by Navajo health officials have increased to 536 since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of information released Sunday afternoon, the number of positive cases rose to 9,977.

Reports indicate that 7,179 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, while 99,217 tests have been administered.

A 32-hour partial weekend lockdown went into effect on the reservation starting at 9 p.m. Friday and will continue through 5 a.m. Monday.

Officials said the lockdown was issued to help control and prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation.

“Our daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases will continue to fluctuate, but our goal is to keep the numbers as low as possible. We do not know the impact of the Labor Day weekend yet, but we are optimistic that our Navajo people continue to practice all of the preventative measures recommended by our health care experts,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

The Navajo Nation sits on three states in the Four Corners area, which also includes Utah’s San Juan County. Here is a breakdown of positive coronavirus cases by service unit:

  • Chinle Service Unit: 2,352
