Police Say Armed Suspect Killed During Officer-Involved Shooting In Bountiful

BOUNTIFUL, Utah – A suspect who police say was armed with a rifle, a bow and arrow, and a knife was killed during an officer-involved critical incident late Tuesday.

Bountiful Police Lt. David Edwards said officers responded to a call just before 10:30 p.m. of a suspicious man outside Viewmont High School, 120 W. 1000 North.

Edwards said when officers arrived, the suspect grabbed his gun. Officer told the man to put the gun down, but he reportedly did not comply.

“The male responded by asking the officers to shoot him,” according to a Bountiful Police Department statement. “Officers repeatedly attempted to deescalate the situation.”

Authorities said the man raised the shotgun and fired. Officers returned fire and hit the man.

Edwards said police and later medical personnel employed life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple officers were involved in the shooting, and the Davis County Protocol Team is investigating.

The suspect’s identity has not been released, but police confirmed he was a 27-year-old Bountiful resident. Currently, it’s not believed he has any affiliation with the school, and it’s unclear why he was there.

No officers were injured.

Classes were put on a 2-hour delay Wednesday due to the investigation.
