Safe In 60: September Is A Perfect Time To Prepare Your Emergency Kit

Sep 21, 2020, 8:02 AM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – September is Emergency Preparedness Month, and if you haven’t already done so, it’s a perfect time to prepare your emergency kit for your home.

If you already have one, this is a great time to take inventory and update any items you may need to add or replace.
We all know that Utah can throw some unpredictable weather at us, and 2020 has been a perfect example of this. Do you have enough supplies to hold you and your family over in the event you must shelter in place for a few days?

Be Ready Utah suggests that we have enough supplies to last 72 hours in the event some kind of emergency forces us to hunker down in our homes.

Whether you get an already assembled emergency kit from the store, or if you make one yourself, make sure they have the important things you’ll need in an emergency.
Your kit should include:
  • Water and food for 3 days – you should have about a gallon of water per person, per day.
  • Blankets or sleeping bags.
  • A Flashlight, a multi-tool, and a whistle for an emergency signal.
  • Dust or filter masks and disinfectant wipes.
  • First-aid kit with any medications  you need for you or your family.
  • A battery powered radio that gets NOAA Weather updates

To make your own, you can use a backpack you have sitting around at home. The important thing is that you have something.

In the unlikely event you need it, you will be glad you took the extra time to be prepared.
