SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah is ranked as the the most energy efficient state in the country, according to a study from WalletHub.
As the weather gets colder and the heaters are fired up, that fact may be hard to believe.
It has to do with how much energy Utahns demand on the hottest days for air conditioning and the coldest days for the furnace.
Move.org also notes that Utah has some of the most affordable monthly utilities in the nation, with an average monthly cost of electricity, water, trash, gas, internet and cable coming in at about $345.
The Beehive State comes in second to New Mexico on that list.
To get the most out of your monthly utilities, you can gauge your home’s energy use with the Energy Yardstick at energystar.gov. Some of the easiest ways to make those energy dollars stretch is by adjusting your thermostat by a few degrees, make sure your water heater is no hotter than 120 degrees, and plug your electronics into a power strip and turn it off when you’re not using them.
