Piano Guys’ New AR App Brings Concert To Your Home

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – They started as a viral sensation. Now, 10 years and nearly 7 million YouTube subscribers later, Utah’s own Piano Guys are dropping a new app called AR Pianist.
The augmented reality app will have you playing right along with a virtual concert from the comfort of your own home.
“Every musician has learned to reinvent themselves right now,” said Steven Sharp Nelson, one of the Piano Guys. “Part of that reinvention for us is the creation of this app.”
Using the app, you can point your camera at your piano – or at an empty part of the room if you don’t have a piano. The augmented reality will kick in and a virtual Jon Schmidt – one of the other Piano Guys – will appear to play a tune.
The Piano Guys said they hope the app promotes music education and enhances the instruction process for people to learn to love instruments.
“Technology means convenience,” Nelson said. “That means that if we come against something that’s hard, we say, ‘I’m going to wait until someone invents something to make this easy for me.'”
He said that’s a problem for parents who want their kids to be able to encounter difficult things and learn from them.
“Technology should be a facilitator,” he said.
