SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Both Tooele and North Summit high schools announced they will move to online learning beginning Tuesday due to rising COVID-19 cases.

Both schools said they will return to school after the Thanksgiving Break on Nov. 30.

At least six other high schools have announced the transition to online classes within the past week.

Details on class, bus and meal schedules can be found here. The school passed the state’s threshold of 15 positive COVID-19 cases in the student body, prompting the move to online learning.

“We need your help and support to ensure our students and staff can remain healthy and safe. Please make sure your family is adhering to the health order to avoid large group gatherings and wearing a mask in public, especially when social distancing is not possible,” Tooele County School District officials said. The safety and education of our students are our top priority and we are doing everything we can in facilitating both as we balance health department guidelines with continued student learning.”

North Summit High

School officials said they have not reached 15 positive COVID-19 cases but made the move to online learning after a spike in cases.

“Although we did not reach the threshold of 15 cases we decided to temporarily move to remote learning due to the sudden and rapid increase in positive cases,” North Summit Superintendent Jerre Holmes said. “We are choosing this week and next week to go remote because we will only miss six days of in-person school due to the Thanksgiving break. We want the students to be in school as much as possible, but believe this is our best option to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the high school at this time.”

Remote learning will only take place at the high school; middle and elementary school students will still attend in-person classes.

“Students and parents are encouraged to follow all of the governor’s COVID-19  health guidelines currently in place across the state. This includes:

  • Wearing a mask in public and any time you are within six feet of someone you do not live with.
  • No social gatherings with individuals you do not live with.
  • Scheduling a test if you have COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Staying home while sick even if you do not think you have COVID-19.
  • Staying home if you have tested positive for COVID-19 even if you do not feel sick.”
