SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Millions will be traveling on roads across the state and across the West for the holidays, even if they’re just going short distances.
The Utah Highway Patrol is joining forces with law enforcement across the Western United States to ramp up seatbelt enforcement.
In a series of videos released by the Utah Department of Public Safety “celebrity” seatbelts like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rocky Balboa remind drivers to take the few extra seconds for safety’s sake.
While it’s good to get some laughs from the campaign, it’s worth remembering the disturbing statistics that make wearing seatbelts a life or death issue.
In 2018, nearly 10,000 Americans who were not buckled in died in crashes. More than half of all crash victims at night were not wearing seatbelts.
The deaths were preventable.
This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign aims to save lives with a zero-tolerance border-to-border approach.
As a primary offense in the state of Utah, drivers and passengers can get a $45 fine. But the UHP wants to remind everyone that the maximum penalty for not buckling your seatbelt is death.
You could cause a death or you could die yourself in one of the thousands of crashes that happen every year.
