SYRACUSE, Utah – Syracuse High School is moving back to online learning after less than 80% percent of the school’s student body participated in voluntary rapid COVID-19 testing.
Officials with the Davis School District said 68% of Syracuse High students were tested in Monday’s pilot program, and 19 individuals tested positive for the virus.
“That is in addition to 27 individuals associated with the school who had tested positive for the virus in the prior 14 days,” said district spokesperson Christopher Williams. “To help teachers prepare for the soft closure, classes will not be held Tuesday, Dec. 8. Teachers will prepare to switch to full-time remote learning, which begins Wednesday, Dec. 9. Students and teachers will then remain in that instruction model through Friday, Dec. 18. “
The district’s winter break begins on Dec. 21.
Officials said Monday’s “Test To Stay” program was run in conjunction with the Davis School District, the Utah Department of Health and the Davis County Health Department. School officials were attempting to avoid a second soft closure.
“We don’t like this back and forth; we don’t like the four days a week and then getting quarantined and being all online,” said senior Keeley Fojtek. “So anyway we can stay four days a week and be safe and healthy in the process is going to make a big difference in our education system.”
