The incident happened Monday evening at Smokey’s Discount Cigarettes near 1500 West and 9000 South.
Surveillance video showed a man enter the store and select merchandise with the help of the store’s clerk. The two then moved to the cash register. When the clerk turned his back, the man grabbed the items from the counter and ran toward the door.
The video showed the clerk chasing after him. Police said the clerk tried to confront the suspect in the parking lot.
“Then the suspect is able to get into his car and then is kind of chasing the clerk with his car, runs over him and then backs up again over him and then runs over him again,” said Scott List, a detective with the West Jordan Police Department.
The clerk was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

“What was attempted, as far as being stolen, it’s not worth hurting anybody. It’s not,” Detective List said. “And even the clerk, it’s not worth putting yourself at risk.”
The suspect is described as a man in his 20s with a shaggy hairstyle who drove a red Buick Verano.
At the time of the crime, he wore a tie-dye shirt, white pants and black jacket and hat.
Police believe that the car the suspect drove is a Buick Verano.
“It’s definitely more serious than what the original crime was,” List said. “Unnecessary is how I’d sum it up.”
