SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A new location and name for the Tooele Valley Utah Temple has been announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Renderings have also been released for the previously announced Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple.
The new Tooele Temple site is planned for the intersection of 2400 North 400 West, just over two miles away from the originally-announced location. It will be named the Deseret Peak Utah Temple.
The previous location was announced in September 2019 near State Route 36 and Erda Way, but more than 1,500 residents signed a petition calling for a referendum to decide if they would allow high-density construction on the Erda site.
The original plans called for a residential development of 446 homes surrounding the temple. The petition said residents approved of the temple but not the home lots.
Last August, the Church announced it had withdrawn the original rezoning request.
A news release said the new temple will be three stories and cover about 70,000 square feet. There will also be a new 20,000 square foot meetinghouse on site.
Project leaders will immediately start working with the city on plans for the temple.
“The First Presidency expresses gratitude for the faith and prayers of Church members in this area, and continues to encourage all people to treat one another with kindness and Christlike love,” the release said.
The Church also announced the location for the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Temple, which will be built at 2093 Powell Road, Cranberry Township.
It will be built on a site that covers roughly six acres.
A news release said it will be a single-story temple of approximately 32,000 square feet with a center spire.
Design details and renderings were expected to be released later. The date for the groundbreaking was not announced. Preliminary plans are still in the works but project leaders will start filing public documents soon.
The Pittsburg Pennsylvania Temple will be the second in the state.
The news release said that there are more than 52,000 Latter-day Saints and 108 congregations in the state.
