ST. GEORGE, Utah – Have you ever given up something you love to get something else you love? That was the sacrifice Jenna Bates found herself making last February.
The 9-year-old from St. George bet her dad that she could go an entire year without sugar in order for her to get a puppy.
“He thought I couldn’t do it,” Jenna said about her dad.
Jenna’s family previously had a dog, and the 9-year-old had been begging for a new dog for some time. Sam, her dad, finally said she could only get a dog if she survived with no sugar for 365 days.
He wasn’t prepared for her to follow through with that promise.
“Crazy,” Sam said. “I think as of right now, like, I thought there’s no way. She ate a lot of sugar.”
Jenna and her mom had fun coming up with recipes free of processed sugar. They even began sharing them on their website, sugarfreemomandme.com.
Feb. 4 marks the one-year anniversary of Jenna’s challenge. It also will mark the day their mini golden doodle Lucy joined their family.
