2-Hour Delays Possible On I-15 Northbound This Sunday Near Sandy

SANDY, Utah – A new exit ramp is close to being done off Interstate 15 in Salt Lake County — and it’s a big one.
Getting it opened by Monday morning is also going to cause huge delays of up to two hours this coming Sunday on I-15 northbound between 10600 South and I-215.
The new stretch of road is an exit ramp system off I-15 if you want to take 7200 South or I-215.
You can access it just before 9000 South.
The Utah Department of Transportation knows this new exit ramp system will take a little getting used to, especially for those who have lived in Salt Lake County and driven this stretch of road for years.
This new ramp will be the only way to get off at 7200 South or I-215, so if you miss it, you must go all the way to 5300 South and then work your way back.
The main idea behind this ramp is safety.
UDOT officials said crashes in this spot will be reduced by nearly 40% because of the new road.
“We see more crashes here than almost anywhere else in the state,” said John Gleason, who is the communications director for UDOT. “It’s because people are weaving in and out of lanes, either getting on at 90th South and then trying to get off at 7200 or I-215. This cuts out that weaving situation.”
The new exit ramp system is essentially a dedicated lane to exit at 7200 South or I-215.
It’s similar to the dedicated lane in Salt Lake City off I-15 for 2100 South, 1300 South, and 900 South.
UDOT said this new exit ramp will also help cut down on the congestion that was common through the area.
With the expected long delays getting the new road to connect to I-15 on Sunday, UDOT suggested avoiding the area altogether if you’re heading northbound.
