OGDEN, Utah – One person was shot and killed by officers after police said the suspect pointed a handgun at officers Friday night.
Chief Eric Young with the Ogden Police Department said police received reports of an aggravated robbery, sexual assault and vehicle theft at 7:11 p.m. Young said the suspect took the victim’s vehicle and displayed a handgun during the incident before fleeing the scene.
At 11:37 p.m., an Ogden police officer located the suspect in the stolen vehicle near 30th Street and Washington Boulevard.
“As the officer approached the vehicle, the suspect ran from the car,” Young said in a news release. “Officers gave chase on foot and began searching a backyard in the 2900 block of Grant.”
Police said the suspect then stood up in the back of a pick-up truck and pointed a handgun at the officers.
“Two Ogden police officers fired their guns, the suspect was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene,” Young said. “Neither of the officers were injured.”
Young added the officers were wearing body cameras and investigators are gathering the footage.
Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
The Weber County Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident, and Young said his department is conducting an independent internal investigation.
Weber County investigators were still working to identify the suspect Saturday morning.
