SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – There were 28 reported avalanches in Utah over the weekend, and six people have died in this year alone.
With this year’s numbers so far, the state has now tied the deadliest avalanche season since the Utah Avalanche Center began recording in the late ’50s.
“At this rate, we are on par to eclipse our total avalanche fatalities of ’04 and ’05, which was eight people,” said avalanche forecaster Craig Gordon.
The last time four people were killed in a single avalanche in Utah was in 1992. That incident happened near Gold Basin in Moab. Saturday’s avalanche ties this one for deadliest on record.
There have been 124 avalanche deaths since the state began keeping track.
