SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Eligible residents were able to begin getting vaccinated at grocery store pharmacies starting Thursday.
Smith’s Food & Drug is part of the 40,000 pharmacies across the country that are now offering COVID-19 vaccinations.
Those 70 and older can get vaccinated at 40 of the grocery chain’s locations in Utah.
Kathryn Lenton was the first person to get vaccinated at the Smith’s located at 455 S. 500 East. She said she received the Moderna vaccine, and she’ll be returning in about three weeks to get her second dose.
Lenton said she lives in an independent facility where a vaccination clinic was supposed take place. However, the plans ended up not working out, so she was happy when she was able to make an appointment at the Smith’s.
“I haven’t done much of anything in a year,” she said. “My cats have gotten spoiled.”
She said once the pandemic is over, one of her first priorities is to go to the ballet.
Lenton noted she’s going to continue being responsible and following public safety guidelines until more people get the vaccine.
The pharmacies each receive 100 doses of the vaccine each week. A Smith’s spokesperson said the next opportunity for people to sign up for appointments will be on Monday.
The pharmacist at the 500 East location said there are 20 appointments available per day. They are currently bookied through Feb. 17.
