SMILEY CREEK, Idaho — A snowmobiler was killed in an avalanche near Galena Summit in Idaho, according to the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.
The incident occurred in the upper reaches of the Smiley Creek drainage on Friday.
One member of a large group of snowmobilers triggered and was caught in a “very large avalanche,” which eventually sent him into the trees, according to a Facebook post from SAC.
“He deployed his avalanche airbag, was not buried, but sustained severe injuries,” read the post.
Unfortunately, the other riders were not able to revive the victim.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s friends and family,” read the post.
At the time of the incident, officials said the avalanche danger was rated “considerable.”
The man’s identity was not immediately available.
