SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, is speaking out on the Winter Olympic Games set to take place in Beijing in 2022.
The senator wrote in a New York Times op-ed that while China doesn’t deserve an Olympic showcase, prohibiting U.S. athletes from taking part in the games would be the “wrong answer.”
Concern about actions taken by the Chinese government has surrounded the plans for the upcoming winter games. Romney said the U.S. should stage an economic and diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics and urge other countries to join in
“Let us demonstrate our repudiation of China’s abuses in a way that will hurt the Chinese Communist Party rather than our American athletes,” Romney wrote. “Reduce China’s revenues, shut down their propaganda, and expose their abuses.”
