SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Health officials have confirmed a person in Utah has tested positive for the Brazil variant of COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday released an update on the P.1 variant, reporting 54 cases have been discovered in the United States.
Eighteen states have reported cases of the variant.
According to the CDC, P.1 was first reported in January.
Health officials said this strain is more transmissible, and those who have previously recovered from the coronavirus could become infected again by this variant.
Studies are currently underway to determine how effective available COVID-19 vaccines are against P.1.
This hasn’t been the first mutation identified in Utah. The Utah Department of Health in January reported one case of the U.K. variant had also been found.
