SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A click and a swipe are all it takes these days to order anything on Amazon and get it within days or even hours. But some Utahns may not be taking advantage of a feature that’s been around for several years — Amazon Smile.
The program donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the charity of your choice, at no cost to you.
Over 1 million charities are eligible and Amazon said $266 million has already been donated.
How To Activate Amazon Smiles
Open the Amazon app and click on the three lines at the bottom left or bottom right of your phone, depending on whether you’ve got an iPhone or an Android.
Open the settings, and you’ll see Amazon Smile is already there on a list below Permissions. Select it and click “Turn On Amazon Smile.”
Then click “Get Started,” then “Next” and you’ll be good to start shopping.
Now you can pick the bigger, well-known nonprofits they provide, or you can search for your city and local charities.
For example, searching for Bountiful brings up the Bountiful Historical Preservation Foundation or food pantry, along with dozens of other, local options.
You can find schools and any number of local charities — there are literally thousands to choose from.
It’s a small amount — just 0.5% donated for every dollar you spend. So if you spend $100, $0.50 goes to your preferred charity. But it can add up throughout the year and remember — this is Amazon donating. You don’t have to donate a thing.
