Spring Runoff Dangers: What To Watch For

Apr 26, 2021, 5:00 AM | Updated: 6:23 am

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Spring is here, and the snow in the mountains is beginning to thaw. Even though Utah saw less snowpack than usual over the winter, there will still be spring water runoff that can create dangers around our rivers and streams.

This near freezing and fast-moving water can be more forceful than it looks, easily knocking an adult off their feet. So for a child or pet, even a small amount of fast-moving water can be dangerous.

Spring runoff typically starts in mid-May and can sometimes last into July. Here are some things to think about when you’re around streams and rivers during that time:

  • Always keep a close eye on your children and pets. They are curious and drawn to water.
  • Have a designated adult watch kids at all times when you are near a stream or lake.
  • Learn CPR and first aid in case of an accident.
  • Always wear life jackets when you recreate on an open body of water.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly two-thirds of all drowning deaths occur between May and August. A little extra vigilance can keep your family outings safe and fun.

Here are some additional water safety tips.
