VERNAL, Utah – Our great state of Utah has nearly 85,000 square miles to explore with a rich history from national parks to prehistoric sites.
But KSL’s Dan Spindle wanted to pique your interest in the great roadside attractions and oddities that might be worth a day trip for that selfie.
Here’s the map with the locations of the top five places you’ve just got to see, plus some honorable mentions — maybe we could call them Instagram worthy — in the four corners of our state, according to SillyAmerica.com.
Might as well start with the must-see Hole N” the Rock in Moab.
It’s a 5,000-square-foot house built into the solid red rock of southern Utah complete with a general store to make sure you get a souvenir to mark your trip.
You’ll see the sign painted on the rock face itself as you drive on U.S. Highway 191 south of Moab.
Head three hours north to Vernal where you’re welcomed by Dinah the pink dinosaur – and she’s not your standard small, green Sinclair variety that you’d see at the Holiday Oil down the street.
From east to west, state line to state line, It’s almost four-and-a-half hours to see the impressive Tree of Utah sculpture.
You’ll pass the Great Salt Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats close to Wendover and there it is, like an artistic interpretation of an atom rising from the desert below.
No. 4 is the world’s largest watermelon slice that was used for a float in Green River and coming in at No. 5 is the Muffler Mr. Spock, perched above the Rainbow Neon Sign Company in Salt Lake City.
Honorable Mentions
The world’s first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise is right here in Salt Lake City on State Street … they’ve got a museum that Colonel Sanders would be proud of.
And last but not least — the Gilgal Sculpture Garden on 500 South and 800 East.
That should keep you busy for a while and remember — we’d love to see your photos and ideas for a great Utah road trip with the hashtag #KSLTV.
