SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – As the drought deepens and the fire season is off to an early start, the Bureau of Land Management issued a fire prevention order that bans target shooting and fireworks on its Utah lands.

Tuesday’s order also banned the use of exploding targets.

“This annual fire prevention order reminds people to be fire-wise to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires, especially considering the extreme drought this year,” said Utah State Director Greg Sheehan.

The BLM said humans started 73% of the 1,155 wildfires in Utah in 2020. Many of those fires burned near roads, communities, and recreation areas. In many cases, they posed a threat to public safety and infrastructure.

“We need to do all that we can to not only take the measures to protect our homes and property but support our local firefighters and first responders,” said BLM State Fire Management Officer Chris Delaney. “This season more than ever, it is vital that we work together to help lessen the exposure for our firefighters and first responders.”

People who violate the order face a fine of up to $1,000.

The entire fire order can be found here along with other fire restrictions and fire prevention information.
