Multiple People Rescued From 5-Alarm Fire At SLC Apartment Building

SALT LAKE CITY — Dozens of firefighters responded to a five-alarm fire at an apartment building near 400 South and 1000 East in Salt Lake City.

Residents living on the fourth and fifth floors of the Incline Terrace Apartments reported seeing flames around 2 a.m. Monday.

“Both of our hearts start pounding – we go out to the balcony and see the fire,” said Veronica Vaughn. “Immediately after, I grabbed my 2-year-old son and we evacuated.”

Firefighters said six people were rescued via their balconies or windows after being trapped in their units due to flames and heavy smoke.

“A guy named Nate from building C was running up and down all the floors banning on the doors yelling ‘Fire!'” said Alex Sallade, who lives on the fourth floor of the building where the fire began. “In my opinion, I think he saved everyone because I wouldn’t have woken up until the fire got too close.”

Sallade said he grabbed his safe and ran out the door with his wife after his neighbor woke him up.

“Our fire alarms didn’t go off,” he said.

Captain Anthony Buton with the Salt Lake City Fire Department told KSL’s Morgan Wolfe that search and rescue teams swept the building multiple times and everyone had been accounted for.

Buton added fighting the fire has been tough due to the building’s size, location and the number of occupants, most of whom were sleeping when the fire broke out.

“Unique thing to this is it is right on the hill,” Buton said. “So we have challenges just with the incline itself.”

A few occupants were evaluated for minor injuries on scene, and no cause for the fire had been given.

Firefighters asked the public to avoid 400 South and 500 South from 900 East to 1300 East while crews are on scene.
