LAYTON, Utah — One person suffered serious injuries after an explosion caused by a welding accident at a Layton home.
The incident happened near South Lisa Drive and Nayon Street around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Battalion Chief Jason Cook with the Layton City Fire Department said a few 911 calls came in, describing the situation as an explosion with a large amount of smoke coming from one of the neighbor’s homes.
First responders arrived on scene and determined the explosion occurred in the garage.
Lt. Travis Lyman with the Layton Police Department said those first responders found a 77-year-old man laying in at the end of the driveway with shrapnel wounds.
Officials say he told first responders he was welding in the garage when the explosion happened.
It was later determined a stray spark hit combustible material while welding, causing the explosion.
Cause of the explosion at East Layton home appears to be an accidental stray spark hitting some combustible material while welding. We’re told the injured homeowner is going to be ok.
