Layton Family Grateful For Dog Collar That Caught Bullet For Husky

LAYTON, Utah – A husky survived being shot in the neck. Its owner said the bullet likely would have killed the dog, but she believes it was saved by its collar.

Axel, Storm and Coconut are all huskies and are all one big happy family, but Coconut is something special.

“She is so loving. She’s just a sweetheart,” said her owner, Carly Kendall. “She’s an adventurer. She likes to adventure.”

Last Wednesday morning, Coconut’s adventuring spirit got her into some trouble.

“She can dig under anything, climb over anything, squeeze through anything. She’s quite the Houdini,” said Kendall.

Coconut decided to perform a disappearing act. She and Axel got out of their backyard by digging a hole under the fence.

Luckily, she was wearing a Fi dog collar with GPS, that way Kendall can always find her.

But after Coconut escaped, Kendall pulled up the app to see where she was and knew immediately that something was wrong.

“The thing is, normally we get, ‘This is where she is,’ and then by the time it updates again, she’s like a mile away because she’s just running, but she just wasn’t moving,” said Kendall.

Kendall jumped in the car and sped to Coconut’s location, which was a couple of miles away. When she got there, she found Coconut lying by the side of the road.

“She was covered in blood, and I was sure she’d been hit by a car,” said Kendall.

Turns out, Coconut and Axel had gotten into a pasture and were chasing sheep, so a rancher shot her with a shotgun.

The pellets went through Coconut’s neck, across her back and out her side.

“Somehow she’s fine. I have no idea how,” said Kendall.

Kendall said it was her collar that saved Coconut’s life.

“The collar stopped a bunch of the shells that would have hit her right in the neck, which would’ve caused more severe bleeding, and it kept working so I could find her, which is a miracle,” said Kendall.

Coconut did have to get stitches in a few places and will have to take it easy for a few weeks, but otherwise, she’s expected to make a full recovery.
