MAGNA, Utah — Police said they were investigating a double homicide that occurred in Magna after a fight broke out overnight at a house party.
Two young men were found dead at the scene early Sunday morning.
They were later identified by police as 19-year-old Juan Valentine Rodriguez and 18-year-old Ivan Valenzuela.
Police said a teenage girl was also shot, but left in fair condition.
“It’s a situation, and you see it time after time, where you have a social gathering — people may show up who weren’t invited, and you add alcohol, and sometimes you have guns, and it’s a recipe for disaster,” said Det. Ken Hansen with Unified Police Department.
Police estimate 30 to 50 teenagers came to the party on Evening Light Cove, and they said it was apparent that many of them were drunk.
“My initial impression from people I saw was that there was a lot of intoxicated or nearly intoxicated young people out there,” said Hansen.
Investigators said the witnesses were cooperative, but some of them took time to sober up before they could be investigated by police.
Police said they were reviewing video from cell phones and surveillance cameras around the neighborhood.
At this point, police said they don’t have a suspect, and won’t say whether the victims were also the shooters.
Neighbors said the people living in the house where the shooting occurred are friendly and mostly keep to themselves.
“Very quiet neighborhood, there’s nothing that happens here,” said neighbor Michelle Hewitt. “Everyone knows… everybody, enough to say, ‘Hi neighbor. How are you?’ and stuff like that. Yeah, I’ve never seen any trouble here.”
Unified Police has several detectives assigned to the case, with a lot of evidence and testimony to go through to try and piece together a narrative.
Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to call Unified Police.
