COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah — A Brighton High School student who attacked the school’s resource officer and tried to take her gun was tased by a bystander and taken into custody, according to Lt. Dan Bartlett with the Cottonwood Heights Police Department.
Bartlett said the incident happened Thursday morning as the student met with a counselor about returning to school.
He said the school’s resource officer was called to the area after a “commotion,” and “unprovoked, (the) school resource officer was attacked.”

The student allegedly bit and tried to strangle the officer, who was holding the student down and trying to prevent him from reaching her gun.
Bartlett said the student expressed a desire “to get the gun and use it” at the school. “He wanted to use the gun to hurt other people,” Bartlett said.
Parents, who were in the school for an unrelated issue with their children, ran to help the officer, who instructed them to use her stun gun.
“So one of the parents grabbed her Taser and tased this young man, which was able to get him under control,” Bartlett said.

Jeff Haney, Canyons School District spokesperson, said the district “applauds the quick actions of the Cottonwood Heights Police, Brighton High employees, and parents who responded to an altercation with an adolescent on campus Thursday morning.”
“We are grateful that those involved did not suffer serious injuries. While we are not releasing specifics about this isolated incident because of student privacy reasons, we want our community to know great measures are taken every day to keep our school campuses as safe as possible.”
