Safe in 60: Keeping children safe online during new school year

Aug 23, 2021, 7:19 AM

SALT LAKE CITY — Now that most children are back in school, they will be spending more time on the home computer or laptop, and it’s a good time for parents to talk with their kids about online safety.

Research shows almost half of children have a computer in their bedroom.

If your children will be on the computer a lot this school year, here are some things parents can do to help keep them safe.

  • Move the computer to a high traffic area of the home where you can monitor internet activity
  • Know your child’s passwords and monitor their browser history frequently
  • Implement safety rules and time limits
    • Don’t overlook the messaging features included in many online games that connect your child with strangers.
  • Consider installing security software and privacy filters
  • Watch for any change in behavior that could indicate cyberbullying or other contact with an online predator.

Communication is the best safety tool. Talk with your child frequently about the potential dangers of the internet, and make sure they know that they can talk to you if they encounter anything uncomfortable.

If your child encounters an inappropriate message, photo or any threatening communication online, you should report it to authorities.
