SALT LAKE CITY — A suspect in a domestic violence situation has been taken into custody following a standoff with police that lasted for a few hours in Salt Lake City.

Around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, police were notified of a domestic violence assault that occurred at a residence near Hudson Avenue and Crandall Avenue.

Brent Weisberg, spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Police Department, said patrol officers responded and attempted to contact the involved parties.

They were able to talk to a woman who said she had been assaulted by a person she knew.

Weisberg said officers then attempted to contact the suspect.

“Despite all the efforts by the patrol officers on scene, the person did not respond to their attempts to communicate with him,” said Weisberg.

He went on to say, based on preliminary information police have, the person may have access to a firearm and has made threats.

SWAT personnel, crisis negotiators and social workers were then called out to assist with the incident.

“As part of the investigation, we did send out a reverse 9-1-1 alert to nearby neighbors, asking them to stay inside during this incident,” said Weisberg. “That was done out of an abundance of caution because we do believe this person has access to firearms.”

Police said the woman sustained minor injuries and is getting the resources she needs.

Just after 10:30 p.m., police provided an update, saying the suspect had exited the home and engaged in a conversation with SWAT personnel.

Due to their efforts, the suspect was safely taken into custody.

The victim and suspect’s identities have not been released.
