Your Fall 2021 guide to streaming TV series with KSL’s Andy Farnsworth

NOTE: This list will be updated as new series are announced or release dates change.

Salt Lake City, UT — The advent of streaming television has given viewers more options to watch more programming in more locations than ever before.  But keeping track of what is available and where you can watch it presents its own set of challenges.

So, to help you spend less time searching and more time watching, here is a (partial) list of new and returning streaming TV series (not counting broadcast TV series) that I recommend or am looking forward to watching, and where you can access them this fall (September-October).

SEPTEMBER

9/1

Only Murders in the Building – Season 1 (Hulu)

Mystery-comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as neighbors in a rich Manhattan apartment building.  All three are big fans of true crime podcasts so they decide to create one of their own while they investigate the death of another neighbor that one of them might have ties to.

Season 1 consists of 10 episodes, with new ones dropping each Tuesday on Hulu.

Dug Days – Season 1 (Disney Plus)

The continuing adventures of the talking dog from Disney/Pixar’s “Up” brings back the original voices from the movie, including Bob Peterson as Dug, the late Ed Asner as Carl Fredericksen, and Jordan Nagai as Russell.

All five episodes of the first and only season of “Dug Days” are available now on Disney Plus.

A.P. Bio – Season 4 (Peacock)

The fourth season of the comedy series starring Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) as a bitter former psychology professor at Harvard who takes a job as the A.P. Biology teacher at his hometown high school while he plots revenge on those he feel that wronged him.  Originally aired on NBC for its first two seasons before moving to Peacock for seasons three and four.  Also stars Patton Oswalt and Paula Pell.

All eight episodes of season four, as well as the previous three season are available now on Peacock.

On the Verge – Season 1 (Netflix)

Four women — a chef, a single mom, an heiress and a job seeker — dig into love and work, with a generous side of midlife crises, in pre-pandemic LA.  Stars Julie Delpy and Elizabeth Shue.

All 12 episodes are available to stream now on Netflix.

Y: The Last Man – Season 1 (Hulu)

Based on DC Comics’ acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome except one cisgender man, Yorick (Ben Schnecter), and his pet monkey. Survivors struggle to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.  Also stars Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn.

Season one will consist of ten episodes, with new ones available each Monday on Hulu.

Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol – Season 1 (Peacock)

Based on Dan Brown’s international bestselling thriller “The Lost Symbol,” the series follows the early adventures of young Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks in the movies, but Ashley Zukerman here in the TV series), who must solve a series of deadly puzzles to save his kidnapped mentor and thwart a chilling global conspiracy.

The only season of “The Lost Symbol” will consist of ten episodes with new ones available each Thursday on Peacock.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – Season 1 (Netflix)

He-Man and Skeletor battle for control of Eternia and Castle Grayskull in a new CG-animated reboot of the series based on the Mattel toy line and aimed at young kids.  Not connected to the other animated “Masters of the Universe” series that premiered in July.

All ten episodes of the first season are available on Netflix.

The Harper House – Season 1 (Paramount Plus)

Animated adult comedy about a woman who gets let go from her high-paying job and is forced to move with her husband and kids into a Victorian fixer-upper on the poorer side of town. Stars Rhea Seehorn, Jason Lee & Tatiana Maslany.

The first season of “The Harper House” will consist of 10 episodes, with new episodes dropping each Thursday on Paramount+.

The Morning Show – Season 2 (Apple TV Plus)

The highly-acclaimed, Emmy-winning series with big stars (Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell) that focuses on the behind-the-scenes power struggles of a fictional network morning news show returns for a second season.

Season two will have ten episodes in total, with new episodes being released each Friday on Apple TV Plus.

Star Wars Visions – Season 1 (Disney Plus)

A fresh and unique entry into the “Star Wars” universe, seven Japanese anime studios bring their talent and perspective to Star Wars, creating nine original stories with original characters.  Each episode has a different animation style and different characters, none of which you have ever heard of, and that’s part of the fun.

All nine episodes are currently available to stream on Disney Plus.

The Croods: Family Tree – Season 1 (Peacock & Hulu)

Following the events in the feature film THE CROODS: A NEW AGE, Ugg and Eep and their family continue living on the Betterman family’s farm and struggle to adapt to each other’s very different lifestyles. None of the big-name voices from the movies return for the streaming series, but they sound pretty similar.

All six episodes of season one are currently available on two different streamers, Hulu & Peacock.

Foundation – Season 1 (Apple TV Plus)

Based on the award-winning novels by Isaac Asimov, “Foundation” chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.  Series written by David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight”) and stars Lee Pace, Jared Harris & Lou Llobell.

Season one of “Foundation” will have ten episodes with new episodes released each Friday on Apple TV Plus.

Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs – Season 1 (HBO Max)

A spinoff of the classic “Flintstones” cartoon, this new animated series follows the escapades of the Flintstones’ daughter Pebbles, the Rubble’s son Bam-Bam and the family “dog” Dino.

All 13 episodes of season one will drop at the same time on September 30th on HBO Max.

OCTOBER

LEGO Star Wars: Terrifying Tales (Disney Plus)

Another LEGO holiday special, this time with “scary” stories in time for Halloween.  After the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” Poe Dameron and BB-8 make an emergency landing on the volcanic planet Mustafar, where Darth Vader’s castle is being renovated into a Sith-inspired luxury hotel. While waiting for his X-Wing to be repaired, Vader’s loyal servant shares three creepy stories linked to ancient artifacts and iconic villains from across all eras of Star Wars.

Acapulco – Season 1 (Apple TV Plus)

In 1984, Maximo Gallardo’s dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime at Acapulco’s hottest resort, Las Colinas. But he soon realizes that working there will be far more complicated than he ever imagined.  A throwback comedy in Spanish and English based on characters from the movie “How To Be A Latin Lover”.

Season One will have 10 episodes and premieres on October 8th, with a new episode released weekly each Friday on Apple TV Plus.

Muppets Haunted Mansion (Disney Plus)

The Muppets’ first-ever Halloween special features celebrity cameos and spooky fun for the whole family.  The Great Gonzo takes on the greatest challenge of his life by spending one very daring night in the most grim grinning place on Earth …The Haunted Mansion.  Inspired by all four of the iconic Disney Haunted Mansion attractions located across the globe at various Disney Parks, the “Muppets Haunted Mansion” includes many hidden easter eggs for Disney fans and “Muppet-ized” sets and props that help immerse viewers in the storytelling experience.

Muppets Haunted Mansion will only be available to stream on Disney Plus.

The Baby-Sitters Club – Season 2 (Netflix)

Based on the best-selling book series by Ann M. Martin, The Baby-Sitters Club follows the friendship and adventures of seven friends as they start their own babysitting business in Connecticut. As demand for their club continues to grow, the five founding girls have now welcomed two new members to their ranks. With the new school year comes booming business, new relationships, personal journeys, and important lessons.

All episodes of Season two will be available on the October 11th release date on Netflix.

Dopesick – Season 1 (Hulu)

A limited series inspired by the New York Times bestselling book by Beth Macy.  Dopesick examines how one company triggered the worst drug epidemic in American history and takes viewers to the epicenter of America’s struggle with opioid addiction, from the boardrooms of Big Pharma, to a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA.

The eight-episode series stars Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Will Poulter, Kaitlyn Dever and Rosario Dawson and will stream on Hulu.

Just Beyond – Season 1 (Disney Plus)

Inspired by the writings of R.L. Stine, “Just Beyond” tells astonishing and thought-provoking stories of a reality just beyond the one we know. Each episode introduces viewers to a new cast of characters who must go on a surprising journey of self-discovery in a supernatural world of witches, aliens, ghosts and parallel universes.

Season one will consist of eight episodes on Disney Plus.

Puppy Place – Season 1 (Apple TV Plus)

Based on the best-selling books from Scholastic, “Puppy Place” chronicles the adventures of dog-loving siblings, Charles and Lizzie Peterson, and the puppy pals they foster in search of forever homes.  Each of the eight live-action episodes tells the story of a puppy who finds his or her way to the Peterson family. Discovering what makes each puppy special offers a unique perspective that helps the pair overcome their own individual hurdles.

Inside Job – Season 1 (Netflix)

Inside Job is an adult animated comedy about the shadow government– and the dysfunctional team whose daily grind is committing the world’s conspiracies. Anti-social tech genius Reagan Ridley (Lizzy Caplan) thinks she can make a difference, if only she could manage her unhinged, manifesto-writing father, her irresponsible coworkers, and finally snag the promotion she’s been dreaming about.

Season one of “Inside Job” will have all 10 episodes available on October 22nd when it drops on Netflix.

Invasion – Season 1 (Apple TV Plus)

Earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity’s existence. Events unfold in real time through the eyes of five ordinary people across the globe as they struggle to make sense of the chaos unraveling around them.  Stars Sam Neill (“Jurassic Park”) and ten episodes will be released weekly on Apple TV Plus.

Star Trek: Prodigy – Season 1 (Paramount Plus)

The first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences will follow the CG adventures of a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a ship they have commandeered but know nothing about. Over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.  Features the return of Kate Mulgrew to the role of Kathryn Janeway, who she played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: Voyager”. The series will stream on Paramount+.
