SYRACUSE, Utah — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Saturday afternoon after a meeting house for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints caught fire and was vandalized in Syracuse.
Officials with the Syracuse Police Department said the city’s fire department was called out to the church, located near 1100 South and 1500 West, for a fire alarm around 1 a.m. Saturday.
When firefighters entered the building, they discovered it was “filled with smoke.”
They said the sprinkler system had also been used to put out a fire.
“Fire crews observed extensive water and property damage throughout the building caused by the fire,” read a press release from SPD. “Additionally, the fire department observed several intentional acts of vandalism throughout the building.”
Police said the fire is being investigated as arson.
The identity of the teen, who was booked into a juvenile detention facility, will not be released.
