Community-wide search underway in Tooele for missing 32-year-old man

TOOELE, Utah — Dozens gathered at a church building in Tooele Saturday to search for Rick Morris, a 32-year-old diabetic who has been missing for several months.

While it may be a big day in the community, it’s turned into Mariah Morris’ daily routine.

For nearly four months, Morris’ family has been searching for her brother, Rick Morris.

They last saw him June 25.

Mariah Morris thinks her 32-year-old brother left home for a walk just before 2 a.m. and possibly suffered a medical emergency.

She said his blood sugar had been critically low, causing him to become disoriented.

“He’s a Type 1 diabetic and had really low blood sugar,” Morris said. “That could be a possibility, and maybe he just found somewhere to sleep or hide.”

It’s why volunteers are organizing searches around ditches, fields, canals, old cars, barns and sheds throughout Tooele County.

“We’re trying to look for places where maybe a child might go if they were scared or tired, because when Rick’s sugar gets low, he gets confused and goes to sleep,” Morris said.

“There is so much area to cover. You go out there and you look at it and it’s overwhelming. It would take us years to cover all of it,” she continued.

Morris said they’ve seen no activity on Rick’s credit cards, and going this long without contacting his family is out of character for him.

Morris doesn’t believe her brother left with the intention of never returning.

“I wish more than anything that that’s what’s happened, and he’s somewhere happy and living his best life, but that’s not what things look like,” Morris said.

And while Morris knows the odds are stacked against them, she’s not giving up on finding her brother.

“I need to find him, and one of the reasons I need to find him is to know if I could have found him in time,” Morris said.

Rick is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, with hazel eyes and dark brown hair.

Police said he might seem disoriented.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts can contact the Tooele Police Department at 435-882-5600.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading directly to the closure in Rick’s case or his location.

Information can also be submitted to the Utah Cold Case Coalition 385-CLUE-313 (385-258-3313).
