Neighbors described what they saw as police came face-to-face with the man.
“I heard yelling. All of a sudden, I hear ‘bang, bang, bang,’” said Sheri Stockle.
She was rattled out of bed this morning and woke up her husband.
“I look out the window and I go, ‘Oh my gosh they shot him,’” he said.
Steps from their apartment, the Stockles watched as police confronted the suspect.
“There were cops all over, we had yellow tape up in the front,” said Tommy Stockle.
He only saw the aftermath but said his neighbor saw the confrontation as the man charged at officers.
“The guy had blood all over his hands and a knife and everything and he had lunged at the cops,” Stockle said.
“It’s a traumatic situation for us all,” Sheri Stockle added. “We have a lot a little kids all around here so I can only imagine what they’re going through.”
Authorities immediately began rendering first aid but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Orem police confirmed no officers were injured in the incident.
The Utah County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team is leading the investigation. Authorities said the involved officers were wearing body cameras and that footage will be given to investigators.
Police said more information would be released at a later date.
