SALT LAKE CITY — Several Utah leaders took to social media Sunday to share their thoughts about former Senator Majority Leader Bob Dole, who passed away at the age of 98 following a battle with lung cancer.

Gov. Spencer Cox shared a tweet from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation announcing Dole’s passing, along with the caption, “Senator Dole is an American hero and an exemplary public official. Our country could desperately use more selfless servants like him. Our prayers are with Elizabeth and his family.”

Utah Sen. Mitt Romney also wrote a brief message on social media.

“When I think of the greatest generation, I think of Senator Bob Dole — a man who dedicated his life to serving our country. Rest In Peace, my friend. Ann and I will be praying for Elizabeth, their family, and loved ones.”

Sen. Mike Lee shared a story, detailing a special gift that had been given to him by Dole almost 35 years ago.

“While I was serving as a Senate page in 1987, Senator Bob Dole (who was then serving as the majority leader) gave me an elephant-shaped keychain pendant with his signature engraved on the back of it. That keychain became one of my most prized possessions.”

Lee went on to say, “Americans are fortunate to have been blessed by Bob Dole’s lifetime of military and government service.”

Rep. John Curtis said, “Bob Dole was one of our greatest. His valiant service from the military through Congress leaves a legacy for generations to come.

The statement concluded, “He was a humble servant, committed to better the lives of all Americans.”

Rep. Burgess Owens thanked Dole for the service he rendered to the United States, adding that his prayers “are with the Dole family.”

Rep. Chris Stewart said Dole “was a true patriot who dedicated his life to the protection and betterment of our Democracy,” in a tweet posted Sunday morning.

Salt Lake County Council member Aimee Winder Newton wrote on Twitter, “I’m so grateful for the public service of Senator Bob Dole. My deepest condolences to his family.”
