CANCUN, Mexico — Members of a Midvale family said they had to run for cover after shots rang out near their hotel in Cancun Tuesday.
Zayn Jones was in his hotel room while his wife and children swam in the hotel pool. His wife saw men on jet skis shoot into the air.
“I woke up to a lot of gunfire, I’d say 20 rounds,” Jones said. “I yelled for (my family) to get down and get cover. As soon as I saw them headed to the corridor, I ran downstairs, got them and brought them upstairs.”
The family hunkered down in their hotel room and essentially has not left since. They say many tourists are following suit.
“We’re definitely on edge. We haven’t been back to the beach,” Jones said. “We’ve seen National Guard walking up and down the beach.”

This is the second incident of gun violence near those hotels in the last month.

Thankfully no one was injured in this shooting. Local police have not released a known motive and have not made any arrests.
Just last month a gunman opened fire in front of luxury hotels in Cancun, executing two drug dealers from a rival gang.
It is something the Jones family considered when they traveled down to the country but never thought they would experience violence themselves.
“I don’t know that this will stop us from coming back but I think it will probably be a while before we do,” Jones said.
Their message for others thinking of traveling to the area is one of caution.
“Keep your eyes open,” Jones said. “Your whole life can change in a moment.”
