Babies for Christmas: Riverton Hospital’s Christmas stocking tradition

Intermountain Riverton Hospital has a unique tradition; the labor and delivery unit places newborn babies born in December in giant Christmas stockings before giving them to parents. The tradition of placing the babies in the stockings, if the parents would like, began when the hospital opened in 2009.
“Families always love that little extra keepsake gift to take home for their little ones,” said Mildora Leerhoff, labor and delivery nurse manager at Intermountain Riverton Hospital.
The babies sit poised gracefully in the stockings, their little heads peeping out the tops.
“We typically have about 12 deliveries in a day at Riverton Hospital,” Leerhoff said. “Bundling babies in stockings is a favorite holiday activity for our nurses, who look forward to bringing a little extra cheer to our new moms in December each year.”
