7-month-old killed in rollover Weber Canyon crash
MOUNTAIN GREEN, Utah — The Utah Department of Transportation is urging Weber Canyon drivers to slow down along Interstate 84 after several crashes have been reported due to icy conditions.
“Several crashes have occurred along this stretch of the interstate in the past few days, as weather conditions have created a fine film of ice on parts of the roadway surface,” UDOT officials said. “The ice is hard to see and typically forms on areas of the interstate that are shaded. Motorists should drive with caution and be prepared for ice at any moment.”
Officials said a white Honda Odyessy lost control on I-84 near milepost 90 Tuesday afternoon before the van spun off the right side of the road and rolled. Three of the van’s five occupants suffered minor injuries, but a 7-month-old boy was ejected from the van and suffered critical injuries.
Authorities said the boy was transported to an area hospital but died from his injuries. UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden confirmed the child’s car seat “was not used correctly.”
Crews temporarily closed one westbound I-84 lane while emergency crews were on scene, and the crash is still under investigation. Troopers were working with the family, which is from Evanston, Wyoming.
UDOT crews have been treating the road regularly and updating electronic roadway signs that warn drivers of possible icy conditions and to drive with caution.
“As winter conditions persist, motorists should leave plenty of time to reach their destination safely,” officials said. “On snow and ice, go slowly, no matter what type of vehicle you drive. Leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you. Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly and never slam on the brakes.”
