SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A 58-year-old Utah woman is dead after an apparent hunting accident with her family.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a woman was shot and killed while her family was on a hunting expedition on the final day of elk hunting season. The shooting appears to be a hunting accident, although the investigation into the deadly incident will continue, as is the usual proceedure.
The woman — who has not yet been identified — was struck in her “mid body area” when a hunting rifle discharged while she was in an ATV side by side. A member of her party had to travel to reach cell service to call for help after the shooting and several agencies responded but the sheriff’s office said she died before officers arrived. An air ambulance was part of the response.
Officials said the emergency call was placed about 11:01 a.m. Monday in northeast Summit County for a shooting that happened approximately a mile south of Interstate 80. The family was actively hunting for elk while using “snow machinery.”
The woman’s family is said to be cooperating with investigators. Along with the sheriff’s office, North Summit EMS and AirMed responded to the call.
