“That person was reportedly armed with a weapon and refused to come out of that vehicle,” said Brent Weisberg, spokesperson with the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Weisberg said out of an abundance of caution, additional resources were called in, including a SWAT team and crisis negotiators, “to help, essentially, slow the situation down and to build a rapport with this person so we could have this situation end peacefully.”
Around 3:45 p.m., the individual exited the vehicle safely, according to Weisberg, and is now in contact with the SLCPD.
“It does appear that he was in a mental health crisis during this incident,” the spokesperson said.
The shelter in place order has been lifted. We anticipate all road closures will be lifted over the next hour as our resources start to clear.

Weisberg said police will be working with social workers and others to provide this individual, who was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, with any resources he needs.
“Obviously, this is a priority for us. When we have information about someone who may be potentially armed, that’s a very serious situation for us, so we are going to respond very diligently. And also, we want to make sure that the safety of the community is the number one priority and the safety for this individual was also the number one priority for our officers,” Weisberg said.
The incident remains under investigation.
Due to the police activity Saturday afternoon, TRAX train service between the Courthouse and Ballpark stations was temporarily stopped. The 900 South Station was also closed while the incident unfolded.
Throughout the early afternoon hours, the Utah Transit Authority worked to implement a bus bridge between the two stations.
At 4:18 p.m., UTA officials said TRAX trains between Courthouse Station and Ballpark Station would be resuming travel, and that the 900 South Station has reopened.
“Expect some residual delays as trains resume regularly scheduled service,” read one of their tweets.
