Utah veteran ‘felt compelled’ to fight in Ukraine, just after his wedding

It’s been over a week since Russia invaded Ukraine, and Americans are answering the plea from President Zelenskyy for help.

“I felt compelled,” Bryan said.*

Bryan is a veteran who served overseas 20 years ago. He was in the Marine Corp, and said his skills could help the Ukrainians which is why he is making the long, dangerous trip.

“He’s my favorite person in the world,” Melissa Allen said. “I am so proud.”

Bryan and Melissa have been together for 8 years. They decided to get married before he left for the uncertain journey to a warzone. He is flying out over the weekend with a group of Americans that include other veterans and emergency responders.

Bryan isn’t just sacrificing his safety, but also his job.

“They told me they couldn’t give me a leave,” he said.

He said it was important for him to help the Ukrainians and hopes for a ceasefire soon. There are an estimated 80,000 other Americans, Canadians, and Japanese that are heading to Ukraine.

“I didn’t know him when he was active in the service, but I have been there for the PTSD and nightmares,” Melissa said.

She hopes everyone can also recognize what our service members sacrifice mentally, and want a peaceful resolution in Ukrianian so everyone can start to heal.

*KSL-TV was asked to not list Bryan’s last name.
