Eagle Mountain family remembers 9-year-old who died suddenly

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — Family members on Monday were remembering a 9-year-old boy who died suddenly over the weekend.

Garth Gagnier said his son, Logan, simply went to sleep Friday night after spending the evening with his grandparents and a sibling, and seemed to be late rising Saturday morning.

“My oldest daughter ran upstairs just to see if he was okay and found him unresponsive and… he’d been gone for hours,” Gagnier said as his eyes welled up with tears.

Gagnier said the boy had no known health issues, and a preliminary autopsy came back as inconclusive.

“He was healthy and he was active, so that’s what’s confusing and frustrating,” the father said.

According to the family, Logan was very active in sports, including football and basketball, and loved BYU football and the Utah Jazz.

The 9-year-old was being remembered Monday as a kind-hearted “goofball” who brightened up the lives of those around him.

“He was just such a personality in our family,” Gagnier said.

He said Logan’s acceptance of all people also stood out.

“When people are so focused on differences, Logan had so much to offer because he treated people like they were people,” Gagnier said. “So, I think what Logan would say he wanted to get out of his life was that.”

Family members set up a GoFundMe* account.

Gagnier said Logan had planned to go to Wednesday night’s Utah Jazz game on what was an apparently designated night for those playing youth basketball.

He said family members still planned to attend in Logan’s honor.

As the family grieved, the neighborhood did as well.

Trees were adorned Monday evening with ribbon, and neighbors had left numerous hearts out on the lawn and on the house with messages like “we love you.”

“He had so much left,” Gagnier said. “I don’t know how we’re going to fill that hole.”
