SPANISH FORK, Utah — A Spanish Fork firetruck was en route to a crash on Interstate 15 when it hit a car causing a chain reaction involving nine cars, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden told KSL TV.
The firetruck was responding to a multi-vehicle crash with injuries on northbound I-15 near milepost 255 Thursday morning. The firetruck got on the freeway at milepost 253 and crossed over to the emergency lane on the left shoulder when it struck a car and caused multiple other crashes.
According to Roden, police are still trying to figure out if the fire engine was driving too close to traffic or if a vehicle was sticking out and blocking the fire engine’s path before the chain-reaction crash.
Three firefighters were transferred to the hospital as a precaution. Additionally, the first and second cars that were hit had children in each car that were transported with minor injuries.
Following the initial crash, emergency crews closed all northbound I-15 lanes to allow a medical helicopter to land on the freeway.
#EmergencyTraffic The med chopper has left the crash scene NB 15 prior to Main Street Spanish Fork. Two right lanes now OPEN to travel, but there's a secondary crash in the back at 600 South adding to the delays which reach 8000 South Sp Fk. @kslnewsradio https://t.co/aD6l7Rpbmp pic.twitter.com/k4wqSwK7hh
